the future

The youth of today are the future, in an ever changing and challenging world, there is more pressure now perhaps more than any other time in history on youth in all aspects of life. This, along with a stronger understanding of mental illness and a recognition that it affects almost everyone in some way. The narrative has shifted to one providing support and resources for our youth to help them learn to manage the mental and emotional challenges they face in today’s world.

the struggle is real

Suicide is a serious public health problem among all age groups. Among youth, it exacts an enormous toll due to the significant years of potential life lost. In 2019, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among 10- to 24-year-olds. This number is even higher among indigenous and marginalized youth.

Youth suicidal ideation, attempt and completion are on the rise. Far more adolescents have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide and survive than those who die by suicide. A 2019 study found that almost 20% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide and close to 10% actually attempted suicide!

As a society we must regard this as unacceptable and continue to do everything in our power to support our young people as they navigate an ever changing and complex world.

troubling statistics

It’s estimated 1.2 million children and youth in Canada are affected by mental illness though less than 20 per cent will receive appropriate treatment. By age 25, approximately 20 per cent of Canadians will have developed a mental illness. Although we don't have exact statistics for other countries, this is a worldwide problem.

• 70% of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence.

• Young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders than any other age group.
